Editing your video

Change the words or remove a step

You can rewrite what the narrator says, or take a step out, without recording the video again. Only the lines you change get a new voiceover, and the same screen recording is re-timed around the new words.

  1. Open the video and go to the Script tab. Each step of the recording has a card with its screen and what the narrator says there.
  2. Click into a line and rewrite it. Your words are saved when you click out of the box.
  3. Click Update video in the bar at the bottom of the window.

The bar appears as soon as anything differs from the finished video, with a note on what will happen, such as 1 line gets a new voiceover. The screen recording stays the same. Type the old words back and the bar goes away again.

Captions follow the new words too.

Click the trash can on a step’s card. The step stays in the list, dimmed, with Put back in case you change your mind. Click Update video to make the video without it.

The Script tab changes words and takes steps out. It can’t add steps, reorder them or change what’s clicked on screen, because the screen recording stays the same. For a different recording, see Record a video again, or make a new video with a new request.

An update only uses minutes for what it adds to the video’s length. Removing steps and shorter words use none. See Your trial, plan and minutes.

If a change would need more minutes than you have, SayScreen says so before it starts: This edit adds about 0:20, and you have 0:10 left. Shorten it, or take something else out. A video can’t go past 8 minutes either.

  • A line can be up to 1,000 characters. Anything longer is cut off when you click out of the box.
  • If you clear all of a step’s words, the step stays in the video with no narration. Use the trash can to take it out.
  • The title, description and thumbnail stay as they were after an update. To have new ones written for the new words, click Write new ones on the Title & thumbnail tab.
